The biggest threat to password security? Over-optimism…
In big organisations and IT firms, it’s often just taken for granted that little things like password security are being taken care of on a daily basis, but this optimism could be one of the biggest threats to your security.
Whether a genuine act of human error or an act with more malicious undertones, staff members will always provide a weak link whenever password security is concerned. In a recent poll by Lieberman Software over one third of respondents (36%) said that IT staff shared passwords within their organisation.
More worryingly in a survey, commissioned by SailPoint, 16% of employees said that they would sell a password to someone outside their company.
These are figures which should have even the most optimistic among you running to schedule in a meeting going over the basics of security and the importance of data protection.
But revelation this isn’t a reason to be suspicious of colleagues, for most, sharing passwords is a case of not understanding what needs protecting within the business. Sharing a password to specific tool or login needed within the company may not initially raise a red flag for staff members, who don’t realise how integral the tool or information is.
So how do you combat this? Well there are many high tech password solutions coming into force such as two-step verification, where a password and code sent separately are needed to sign in and even the selfie password, suggested by Amazon at the extreme end of the scale.
But alongside these tech solutions, the simple aspect of education could be one of your most powerful weapons in password sharing prevention.
If staff members, colleagues and employees understand the importance of the data, protected by passwords and the issues breach of security could result in are highlighted, it’s much more likely to stop them in their tracks next time they are about to write down any digits.
