Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is one of the most significant business inventions of the internet era, but it has not realised its full potential yet. Take this year for instance – we are barely three months in but already there are trends which have emerged that indicate they could shape the future of Business VoIP.

In this blog, we look at some of them:

Integrated VoIP

Thanks to a phenomenon known as the Internet of Things (IoT), in theory, any connected device can communicate with any other connected device. That means more and more opportunities to integrate business VoIP into other parts of an organisation’s web infrastructure. In industries such as manufacturing, this means that VoIP devices can be used as a way of tracking an IoT infrastructure, which could track stock levels, product location and more.

5G

The introduction of 5G around the world will mean that the functionality of VoIP devices is, in turn, improved. In 2018 we will see 5G rolled out extensively, offering faster connection times and more responsiveness to VoIP devices. Overall communication will be improved as a result, as will the opportunity to align with wider web infrastructure such as IoT detailed above.

Mobile VoIP

While mobile VoIP is not new, 2018 is set to be the year in which it really takes off. Manufacturers have set their sights on producing more handsets, with platforms such as Android OS coming to the fore. That means we can expect smartphone giants from Samsung to Google, Sony and HTC to allow their devices to accommodate VoIP increasingly. That could, in turn, lead to a whole new generation of VoIP users who are introduced to the technology by their mobile device. A study (https://www.grandviewresearch.com/press-release/global-mobile-voip-market) by Grand View Research has forecast that the VoIP market is set to reach a value of $145.76 billion by the year 2024, underlining the potential which experts believe that the technology has.

So that is our look into the crystal ball at some important trends which are emerging in 2018 and could come to represent the next chapter for VoIP.
